Questions to Ask a Realtor

Buying a home is one of the most important financial transactions you will participate in. Here are a series of questions you are encouraged to ask your realtor. Know something about the realtor's qualifications before you buy or sell a house. When you interview a prospective realtor, make sure you know the following:

  • How many buyers have you represented
in the last six months? Would you provide me with their names and telephone numbers for references?
  • How long have you been a realtor in Rochester area?
  • Prior to making an offer on a home, will you provide me with comparable sales that include market times and sale prices?
  • Who pays your fees?
  • How will you keep me informed of any new listings that come on the market?
  • How often will you check for new listings for me? Once a day, twice a day, once a week?
  • Will you show us For Sale By Owners and Foreclosed homes?
  • Do you provide a written guarantee that states that I can cancel the buyer representation agreement if I am not satisfied with your services? NO QUESTIONS ASKED!
  • How long do I have to sign a buyer's agreement for?
  • What education classes have you taken in buyer representation? Do you have the National Association of Realtor Accreditation ABR (Accredited Buyer Representation) and CRS (Certified Residential Specialist)?
  • What price range are most of your sales in?
  • Will you show us all homes for sale, not just your companies?
  • What are the different financing options that will be best for our situation?
  • Will you review my financial options with me?
  • Will you show us new homes as well as existing ones?
  • Do you get paid more if you sell your company's listings to me?  Don't you feel this is a conflict of interest?
  • How many years have you been in the real estate business?
  • How many homes did you sell in the last full year? How many have you sold this year?
  • Where does your company rank among other companies in the area?
  • What contacting systems do you have in place to make it easy for me to contact you in an emergency?
  • Do my calls get returned in a timely manner?
  • Do you have a personal assistant to make sure no details are overlooked?
  • What part of your business is referred to you from past clients?
  • Is selling real estate your only job?
