Radon and Lead Information

Radon gas and lead-based paints are two concerns of homebuyers in Minnesota, as well as in most other states. Finding out whether your home is infected is a difficult task. There is much debate over the extent of the dangers. The following websites, some government and some private, can help you learn more about these issues.

What is Radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, naturally occurring gas that is produced by the radioactive decay or uranium within rock and soil and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found all over the U.S.

What is Lead Based Paint?

Many houses built before 1978 used paint that contained lead (called lead - based paint). Lead from paint, chips, and dust can pose health hazards if not taken care of properly.  Federal law requires that individuals receive certain information before renting, buying, or renovating pre-1978 housing

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

The EPA has a consumer-friendly web site that's packed with information about radon, lead-based paint, and other topics. More than a dozen publications about radon are available, including "Home Buyer's and Home Seller's Guide to Radon," "A Radon Guide for Tenants" and "Building a New Home? Have You Considered Radon?"

National Safety Council

The National Safety Council’s web site educates the public about a number of safety-related issues in the home. The web site has information about indoor air quality, lead poisoning and hazardous chemicals.

Health House

This site was developed by the American Lung Association of Minnesota. You will find information regarding home pollutants and tips on building a healthy home.

American Homeowners Association

This site contains general homeowner information on a variety of subjects. There are numerous book lists, magazine, videos and articles about home safety, which focus more for the do-it-yourselfers rather than in-depth technical knowledge.
